Known for the wide variety of its tourist attractions, Barrie is a thriving center of culture and recreation. Such winter activities as skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing are extremely popular in the area, as exemplified by the wealth of ski resorts that includes Horeshoe Resort, Snow Valley, Mount St. Louis Moonstone, and Blue Mountain. There are always shows and concerts to take in, and the live concert series put on by Georgian College every year is held in particularly high regard. Live performances are hosted regularly by Theatre by the Bay, Talk Is Free Theatre, and the Huronia Symphony, and On Stage Performance Group uses Grove Park Home for their practice sessions. In Barrie’s downtown area, the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts puts on a range of film screenings, plays, dance recitals, concerts, and other performances. For art lovers, the MacLaren Art Centre is something of a mecca, marked by its bronze cast of Auguste Rodin's "The Thinker," which is on permanent display in front of the gallery. There are many other independent galleries and studios of note around the city. For indoor athletics, East Bayfield Recreation Centre, Allandale Recreation Centre, Barrie Community Sports Complex, and YMCA of Barrie are the places to go. The local OHL hockey team, the Barrie Colts, have played at the Barrie Molson Centre since 1995, while the local IBL baseball team, the Barrie Baycats, have called Coates Stadium home since 2001. Over the relatively short time they have been playing in Barrie, the Baycats have brought home three championships. Education in Barrie overseen by two major public English school boards and two French school boards in addition to multiple private schools. Barrie is also home to Georgian College. With more than 125 career-focused programs across seven locations in Central Ontario (Barrie, Midland, Muskoka, Orangeville, Orillia, Owen Sound and South Georgian Bay), Georgian serves 11,000 full-time students and 28,000 Part-time Studies registrants annually. Although there are no major airports in or near Barrie, there are three small airports that service light aircraft.
