Thornton is a small hamlet in Essa. A population of approximately 1,000, it is a flat area recognized for its fertile soil. Similar to other rural areas on Ontario, there are plenty of local accommodations, including a fire station, a public library, a shopping plaza, a corner store, and restaurants. Those who are trying to stay active can also visit the Vidya Centre for Yoga and Wellness, which shares a building with Vidya's Veggie Gourmet Restaurant.

Small as the hamlet is, it hosts its own minor league hockey team, the Thornton Tigers, who play their games at Thornton Arena. In recent years, two new developments have been initiated in Thornton, and the population is growing.
