On the northwestern shores of beautiful Lake Simcoe, Oro-Medonte is a township that is filled with history, having played an integral role in the black settlements of Ontario after a landmark decision made in 1819 that called for equal land grants to whites and blacks. Since then, Oro-Medonte has been built up into a respectable community of slightly more than 20,000, much of its boundaries still comprised of rural, undeveloped land. After the last Canadian National train passed through Oro-Medonte in 1996, the railway was re-purposed into a recreational trail that stretches from Barrie to Orillia, making Oro-Medonte a key spot on the way from these two grounds. Thus, to people who are drawn to the outdoors, Oro-Medonte can be seen as a dream settlement, its reputation for nature activities bolstered by three major ski resorts within its limits: Mount St. Louis Moonstone, Horseshoe Resort, and Hardwood Ski and Bike. For easy access, the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport, located near Guthrie, serves the Township.
